Public transport in Baku has become much easier for tourists in 2026. You no longer need to buy a transport card — you can simply pay with your bank card or smartphone.
The system is simple, fast, and affordable.

How to Pay for Transport

Today you can pay in three ways:

💳 bank card (Visa / Mastercard)
📱 Apple Pay / Google Pay
🟦 BakıKart

These options work in: metro, most city buses

How to Use the Metro

Using the metro is very easy:

  1. Go to the turnstile
  2. Tap your card, phone, or BakıKart
  3. Wait for the signal
  4. Enter

The fare is automatically deducted — about 0.60 AZN per ride.

Do You Still Need BakıKart?

BakıKart is still available, but in 2026 it is no longer essential.
It’s useful if:

  1. you stay in Baku for a longer time
  2. you don’t have a contactless card
  3. you frequently use buses

For short trips, a bank card or phone is much more convenient.

Bus System

Buses use the same payment system:

  1. enter through the front door
  2. tap your card or phone
  3. fare is charged automatically

Most buses accept contactless payments, though a few older ones may still require BakıKart.

Metro Hours

The metro operates daily: from 06:00 to 00:00
During rush hours it can get crowded, but trains run frequently.

Useful Stations for Tourists
İçərişəhər — Old City
Sahil — Boulevard & center
28 May — main hub
Gənclik — shopping & parks

Taxi Alternative
You can also use: Bolt, Uber
But during traffic, the metro is usually faster.

Tips

  • use your phone or bank card — easiest option
  • keep a backup payment method
  • avoid rush hours if possible
  • combine metro and taxi for convenience
